Individuation does not shut one out from the world, but gathers the world to oneself. (Jung, 1969, p. 226 para 432)

One morning on my daily walk, I saw this coyote about five hundred feet in front of me. It was sniffing the ground as it made its way along the trees. I had my camera with me and wondered if I could get a photo of it. I walked closer until I was across the road from it. I took a few images but then moved my camera away from my face and looked at it directly. We both stared at each other.
In that moment, I sensed a life-to-life connection. I wondered what its experience of me was. I felt as though I witness to true natural beauty. I was stunned, speechless, and caught in an eternal moment of the encounter. I raised my camera once more to make the photograph above. It stood still, I clicked the camera and it turned it head forward and continued its journey.
The shared moment is captured digitally, but it is also embedded in me. I can still feel the look of the coyote, a tender, quiet natural moment.
When some aspect of objective or outer reality intrigues us, engages us beyond a fleeting cognitive scan, then it is likely that it is a projection of our Soul and our portal to the collective consciousness, to the Brahman awareness, to the womb of the flow of the Universe. It must then be considered a synchronistic event, a messenger from our Soul and the Universe, alerting us to the numinous in the normal, to the sacred in the mundane, to the ocean in a drop.
Here are some […]

…active imagination. The latter is a method (devised by myself) of introspection for observing the stream of interior images. One concentrates one’s attention on some impressive but unintelligible dream-image, or on a spontaneous visual impression, and observes the changes taking place in it…. The advantage of this method is that it brings a mass of unconscious material to light. (Jung, 1934/1954/1968, pp. 190 para 319-120)

The image of the foliage of the palos verde tree shows one blossom in focus and other aspects of it in various stages of growth are out of focus. The work of active imagination, as described in the Jung quote above, is to choose something “unintelligible…or spontaneous visual impression” to bring it into focus and engage the response. It is a method to enhance the subtleties of what is clearly seen or bring forth that which is unclear.

One advantage of taking the time to engage subtle dream material, daydreams, etc. is the development of considerations beyond our ego. The idea is to have curiosity about the current relationship and how might it change with further examination. The term Jung used tells me what I am to do, that is, actively imagine. It is engagement with freedom and flexibility to question the current view and what is needed to understand the relationship more fully to what is clear and out of focus. I can have a dialogue with any part of the image to get a greater appreciation of my relationship to it.

Two topics are in the forefront of the news again. Covid numbers are rising again. The political scene is actively examining voter rights and rules. What is your view? Where is your clarity and what is out […]

Experience shows us that the sense of the “I”—the ego-consciousness—grows out of unconscious life.

As I watch the kite festival, I think of dynamic interaction of the wind and the kite. It feels parallel to the relationship to the soul and the ego. I think of the wind as the energy flow of the soul as it animates the ego. When conditions are right, the kite and wind let me see how valuable the invisible wind is for the kite to fly. When conditions are right, my soul shows my ego its higher purpose. My ego, like the kite, needs to be constructed of the right material to fly. My ego needs contact with my soul to engage the life I am here to live out.

Each one of us lives out of two realities: the Outer Ego reality and the Inner Soul reality. The center of our outer reality is the Ego or Aham in Sanskrit. The center of our inner, outer, total, past, present, future and timeless reality is our Soul or Atman. The task of our lifetime is to gain access to this deeper, transcendent, timeless, celestial consciousness. Every philosophical, religious, spiritual and psychological system offers a framework to cross that bridge from Ego to the Soul. Each system is like the blind men trying to describe the elephant. Each has a valuable perspective on the totality of his transcendent reality: they run into trouble when they claim to describe the totality, which is beyond comprehension for any mortal, any framework. Together, they give us a better but not a complete picture. Modern, personal spirituality uses these different systems as pieces of an infinite jigsaw puzzle. The process of accessing your […]

The serious problems in life, however, are never fully solved. If ever they should appear to be, so it is a sure sign that something has been lost. The meaning and purpose of a problem seem to lie not in its solution but in our working at it incessantly.(Jung, 1960b, p. 394 para 771)

The image reminds me of the question, “How do I keep my head above water?” The frog in the photo is resting in shallow water of a creek. Its life requires water, air, and food. It absorbs water through its skin (does not need to drink) and breathes air through its nostrils. Its life must keep a balance of having a food supply and being able to get away from predators quickly. The food supply is often found above the water, so while it sits it is also looking for something to eat. Survival requires vigilance for nutrition and well as protection from predators. The vigilance is worked at “incessantly”.

Our human life also requires vigilance, perhaps not quite as dramatic as the frog, yet we must pay attention to what nurtures us and what threatens us. As humans, we also have another dimension of survival/flourish. It is the spiritual issues of life and what we believe/follow regarding after life. There are many options in philosophy, religion, etc., that might guide us in attaining a rich environment to feed the deeper part of ourselves. The question is how much we immerse and how much do we stay above—just like the frog.

For most of the civilized sections of our society – albeit, fast shrinking, the real dangers for most of us is not outer but inner dangers. For the enlightened sector […]
