The man, therefore, who, driven by his daimon, steps beyond the limits of the intermediary stage, truly enters the “untrodden, untreadable regions, where there are no charted ways, and no shelter spreads a protecting roof over his head. There are no precepts to guide him when he encounters an unforeseen situation—for example, a conflict of duties. (Carl G. Jung, 1961, p. 344)

I remember how excited I was to go to the playgrounds as a child. They were an exciting place with various structures to engage a blend of physical strength, imagination, and gravity. For the most part, it was about my ability on the piece of equipment rather than a competition against anyone else. It was a challenge, especially when it was something I had not tried before. Then of course, once I was familiar, it was about climbing faster, jumping higher, etc. It was practice of making choices, gaining new skills, as well as natural growth and development as it occurs in childhood.

Today, my “playground” is so different in a structural way. It requires making choices, but they are from a variety of ideas, responsibilities, dreams, personal and spiritual growth endeavors. When I let my dreams lead me, I always seem to be invited to be more than my ego recognizes or identifies with. There is often much more experience to engage in, more horizontal as well as vertical.

When presented with a challenge, I do better when I take an optimistic view with curiosity and action. I must ask myself what success looks like and how will I know I’m successful? I ground myself in trust that more will be revealed as the journey proceeds, rather than thinking I must know […]

Experience shows that it is practically impossible, owing to adverse circumstances in general, for anyone to develop all his psychological functions simultaneously. The demands of society compel a man to apply himself first and foremost to the differentiation of the function with which he is best equipped by nature, or which will secure him the greatest social success.

(Jung & Bollingen Foundation Collection (Library of Congress), 1976, p. 450 para 763)

The forces of nature are at work as the ocean body breaks into droplets against the rocks. There are several influences that make up the moment of the image. Light, color, texture, motion, and stillness compose the scene. Each element contributes its natural quality make this the best moment.

I, too, am influenced by life’s forces. There are qualities I do not have to work hard at for them to be experienced in the world. There are innate abilities that feel easy to show the world. Then, of course, there are aspects of me that need patience and effort to improve (my inferior functions). I need to remember to maintain a balance between acknowledging what I am good at and what I must improve. I need to give credit where credit is due, and patience to the skills I am developing.

While the Sensate function (attention to detail) renders the aesthetic of this image available to consciousness, I wonder what would I see with my intuition function in this image? Does my intuition see the mirror of some larger forces in the collective crash into the rock of my ego consciousness? Is this an inner image the experience of the global pandemic, war and strife as I experience it in my inner space?

If I were to experience […]

Without depth, I do not have the heights. I may be on the heights, but precisely because of that I do not become aware of the heights. I therefore need the bottommost for my renewal. If I am always on the heights, I wear them out and the best becomes atrocious to me. (Jung & Shamdasani, 2009, p. 262)

The palos verde blossoms create a yellow and orange carpet on the dirt. They are thick enough that hardly any ground can be seen in the image. In the beginning of summer, my tree bursts of yellow and orange. The blossoms are one of the first things to show up at daybreak and tell the world sunrise is here. It is stunning to see such bright colors in the tree against the morning sky. .

When the blossoms fell this year, I asked my gardener to leave them on the ground rather than rake them up. I enjoyed the blossoms in their fallen state as well as in the tree. In fact, when the tree was bare of blossoms, and only had its tiny green leaves, I could still enjoy the blossom colors as they dry under the umbrella of its branches. I saw them on the ground and remembered them in the heights.

In the Jung quote above, he tells the value of the spectrum. It helps me have perspective of the world at large. When I attend to the full spectrum, I have a greater appreciation for the value I notice. When I keep the spectrum in mind, I have less chance of getting locked into a particular point of view.

Trees need roots. For the personality to blossom to its highest potential, it must cultivate the […]
