It is only because the persona represents a more or less arbitrary and fortuitous segment of the collective segment of the collective psyche that we can make the mistake of regarding it in toto as something individual. It is, as its name implies, only a mask of the collective psyche, a mask that feigns individuality, making others and oneself believe that one is individual, whereas one is simply acting a role through which the collective psyche speaks.(Jung, Hull, & Jung, 1966), para 245

What a surprise to discover a 5-foot snakeskin in the bushes. I do not know what kind of snake shed its skin. (It may be a black snake which is common in the area.) I do know that is has outgrown this shell of its existence.

I begin to wonder what it means to I find this symbol of transformation. There are two ideas that come to mind. First, the snake has a new skin and subjectively it feels freedom from what no longer suits it. Second, I think about what skin I would like to shed to feel the freedom of a contemporary me.

The image is a bit scary as well as beautiful. There is a blend of terror and hope. It certainly is spooky yet reminds me how it feels to let go of something that no longer suits me. I feel clean and refreshed. I imagine myself stepping out of the “shell” I have been in, and how the dynamics of the world and me would shift. My potential would feel closer to realization. I would be more of who I am without the burden of what no longer fits.

For every occasion, there is an outfit. For a […]

The Mythic Self – The Rest of the Story-In the Eye of the Storm – An individual response to the Personal and Global Crisis.

We cannot visualize another world ruled by quite other laws, the reason being that we live in a specific world which has helped to shape our minds and establish our basic psychic conditions. We are strictly limited by our innate structure and therefore bound by our whole being and thinking to this world of ours. Mythic man, to be sure, demands a “going beyond all that,” but scientific man cannot permit this. To the intellect, all my mythologizing is futile speculation. To the emotions, however, it is a healing and valid activity; it gives existence a glamour which we would not like to do without. Nor is there any good reason why we should. (Jung, 1961, pp. 300-301)

I can make a scientific explanation of the image, which according to the Jung quote, brings satisfaction to my intellect. There is value in being familiar with the objects in view and understanding what is happening. The result brings ease and quiets my mind like solving a math problem. Somehow, I find the knowledge settling.

There is another way to engage the image that invites my imagination—through story. What is the story of image? I can start in this moment of flight and flowers where the sunlight is enlivening all the colors. I imagine myself as each of the various elements. What is the experience of the butterfly and the flowers? Is the story/myth about the movement of the butterfly or the stillness of the flowers? What is the history of each? What is the future of each? When I engage and amplify the image with my imagination, my emotional life is enlivened. My intellect is stimulated with possibility rather than settled and quiet.

Story can explain […]

The Seeds of the Soul– A Window into the Eternity – In the Eye of the Storm – An individual response to the Personal and Global Crisis.

The hypothesis of the unconscious puts a large question-mark after the idea of the psyche. The soul, as hitherto postulated by the philosophical intellect and equipped with all the necessary faculties, threatened to emerge from its chrysalis as something with unexpected and uninvestigated properties. It no longer represented anything immediately known, about which nothing more remained to be discovered except a few more or less satisfying definitions. Rather it now appeared in strangely double guise, as both known and unknown.(Jung, 1969, p. p.167 para 356)

The image provides an early morning view of a seed branch as it emerges from the womb of the pod. I visited this spot the evening before, and the pod was completely closed. I was surprised at the amount of growth that happened during the night.

The dynamics remind me of Jung’s ideas of the psyche. The light of the sun shines on the pod as the life of the seed branch begins to emerge from its womb. Some of it can be seen. Some remains hidden. All will be revealed in due time. As the branch matures more, the outer covering falls away so it can fully connect with its source of growth, the sun. The sun gives the proper energy for the seed branch to use for tis development. The branch must do the work of life contained in its genetic code to fully achieve maturity. The environment has the essential ingredients for its proper development.

Your soul is the seed. The branch is your ego consciousness. The night is the unconscious. The Sun is the Spirit which stimulates the seed of the Soul to blossom. The nigh is the womb of the Psyche or the Unconscious where […]

The Sacred Marriage – A Win-win Dynamic- In the Eye of the Storm – An individual response to the Personal and Global Crisis.

All conceivable statements are made by the psyche. Among other things, the psyche appears as a dynamic process which rests on a foundation of antithesis, on a flow of energy between two poles. (Jung, 1961, p. 350)

Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is not actually a moss but rather a bromeliad. It is an air plant that is in the same family as pineapples. It gets its nutrients from air particles. It does not harm its host or use the host’s nutrients. It can even grow on telephone, electric, and cable company wires. When examined closely there are often tiny yellow-green flowers.

It reminds me of the individual psyche. There are so many different threads of life in it. There are aspects that congregate and others that reach out into the unknown. It seems to have a “body”, yet its form is not predetermined. There is freedom and attachment as it hangs from the branch. Its life is guided by experience, but not constricted in its shape. It grows yet is under the influence of gravity.

In world, fundamentally, there are two types of relationships. One, in which the two partners are intertwined in a symbiotic at best and parasitic at worst relationship. The parasitic relationships are win-lose relationships where the parasite depletes the host of their soul energy. The co-dependency and living with a narcissist are two examples of such a relationship. At the end, this becomes a lose-lose relationship, since the predator accumulates a lot of negative karma which must be retired in this or future lifetimes. Unless the narcissist/predator undergoes a profound transformation in their personality, this relationship must end for the prey to reclaim their soul.

The symbiotic relationship is a win-win relationship, […]
