A Synchronistic Moment
The Dance of the Pandemic & the Protests – Co-incident or Synchronistic?
In the Eye of the Storm
An individual response to the Global Crisis

In a storm, the safest place is in the eye of the storm. My colleague BJ and I will share our daily reflections on this centering process from an Analytical perspective, sharing from the repertoire of our personal and professional experience. BJ is a psychologist and a photographer and will pick an image of the day that catches him in this collective crisis. I will amplify it from a Jungian Analytical perspective. We hope that this may offer you a baby step on the path to your own unique response to this chaos.
We can see now that the unconscious produces contents which are valid not only for the person concerned, but for others as well, in fact for a great many people and possibly for all. (Jung, 1953, p. 178)
I thoroughly enjoy watching wildlife. I am fascinated by the variety of forms and behaviors. Sometimes when observing them, I think about what motivates their whereabouts and what makes them decide to move. The bird above and I spent several minutes together before it left the branch for no apparent reason. It seemed captured by me as I was by it.
In the pandemic and protests, we too are situated for “a time”. I began thinking about motivation and action. What motivates me to do or not do aspects of my life? The first thing I need to know is where I am. The way I got here may not be as important as paying full attention to the moment I am in. When fully present, I make space to consider internal or external invitations for exploration. There are times of determination as well as curiosity to influence my attention and perhaps movement. As I listen deeply, I can assess the value of personal as well as universal concerns.
The world has stillness and momentum. Being fully present and anchored (like the bird) lets me consider my options as my unconscious reveals itself.
We may wonder why the Virus and Humanity have “Locked onto” each other at this point in time? What is this synchronicity about? The Virus is a messenger from the Universe. It is a harsh teacher but what is it trying to communicate? It is possible that it will stay as a guest till we “Get It”! So what are we not getting?
It is tempting to see the connection between the COVAD-19 and the Pandemic in purely Causal manner. But Causality is only a partial and relative explanation. (Jung, 1969)para 819. There is an Acausal meaningful connection where the connection between events is Unconscious, Numinous and Archetypal.(Jung, 1969)para 827, footnote 10. Such an Unconscious connection between meaningful simultaneous events are what Jung called Synchronistic Phenomenon. They arise from the common substrate of human consciousness – the Collective Unconscious and its building blocks the Archetypes. (Jung, 1969)para 840. When there is darkness in the individual or the collective consciousness, it creates a sort of a vacuum, which gives an Archetype an opportunity to slip into the space vacated creating a Synchronistic phenomenon.(Jung, 1969)para 841. This phenomenon of Synchronicity usually constellates when we are stuck in some impossible or a dead-end situation. Then the Archetype is activated to rescue us from this bind and point a way out of the situation.(Jung, 1969)para 847. This state of lowered or constricted consciousness or a collective dead-end street in human civilization is a state of abaissement du niveau mental. (Jung, 1969)para 856.
So the real question is why is human civilization in a state of lowered consciousness – abaissement du niveau mental, necessitating the archetypal activation causing the Synchronicity of COVAD-19 and the Racial Justice Protests: both Global phenomenon? While I have my own personal speculations as to the cause of such a constriction and lowering of Collective human consciousness at this point in time activating the Archetypal forces that have Unconsciously engineered these two Global phenomenon of the pandemic and the protests, I am not going to impose my speculations on our readers. Rather, I invite each one of our readers to come up with their own reflections about why there is such regression in their individual and societal lives. Then these need to be dialogued. Our existence and survival depend upon us “Getting it Right”. If we do not succeed, then the archetype of destruction – Shiva, the destroyer is upon us.(Bedi, 2007) pages 50-51. Presently, we have the activation of the archetype of the divine messenger – Hermes or Krishna. Whether we heed the divine messenger or let the clean up guy do the job is up to US!
Some Points to Consider:
How do you determine stillness or movement?
How has the pandemic and/or protests influenced your attention?
What determines your priorities in life?
When do you know you are on the right course or need to change?
What effect have the protests had in your life?
How do you shift from thinking about to doing about?
What is your assessment of the reasons that your personal life has lowered consciousness? About what issues?
What is your self-reflection about the reasons that our current civilization is regressed? In what manner and on what issues?
Do you see possibilities of change?
Do you feel that destruction of certain aspects of your personal life and our collective life is the only way out?
